Geologists study the structure, composition, and processes of the Earth. Their work helps us understand natural hazards like earthquakes and volcanoes, find resources such as minerals and fossil fuels, and protect the environment. Geologists spend time both in the field, collecting samples and making observations, and in the laboratory, analysing data. They may also use specialised software to create maps and models of geological structures. In the UK, geologists are employed by environmental consultancies, mining companies, oil and gas firms, government agencies, and universities. The job can involve travel to various sites, sometimes in remote locations, and may require a good level of physical fitness.

🚀 Careers in this path

Build a Strong Science Foundation

Study Relevant GCSEs

Focus on science subjects such as Geography, Chemistry, Physics, and Maths at GCSE level.

Achieving good grades in these subjects will give you a solid foundation for future study. Geography is especially useful as it introduces Earth systems, while Chemistry and Physics provide the scientific background needed to understand geological processes. Maths is important for data analysis and problem-solving skills.

Choose A Levels or Equivalent

Select A Levels (or Scottish Highers or BTECs) in subjects like Geology, Geography, Chemistry, Physics, or Maths.

Many universities prefer applicants who have a combination of science subjects, particularly two from Geography, Chemistry, Physics, or Maths. Some schools offer Geology A Level, which is excellent preparation, but if not available, other sciences are suitable.

Gain Degree-Level Qualifications

Apply for a Geology Degree

Go to university and study for a Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related subject.

Most geologists have at least a BSc in Geology, Earth Sciences, or a similar field. These courses cover topics such as mineralogy, palaeontology, structural geology, and fieldwork. Look for courses accredited by the Geological Society of London for the best career prospects.

Take Part in Fieldwork

Participate in field trips and practical work as part of your degree.

Practical experience is vital in geology. University courses often include field trips to different locations to study rocks, minerals, and geological processes in real-world settings. These trips develop your observational and analytical skills.

Develop Professional Skills and Experience

Gain Work Experience or Placements

Look for internships or summer placements with environmental consultancies, mining companies, or research organisations.

Work experience lets you apply your knowledge in a professional setting, make industry contacts, and learn about different specialisations. Many employers value hands-on experience as much as academic qualifications.

Join Professional Bodies

Become a student member of the Geological Society of London or similar organisations.

Membership gives you access to networking events, conferences, and the latest research in geology. It also demonstrates your commitment to the profession and can provide support with your career development.

Sample Qualifications

A Geologist and a Geoscientist both study the physical and biological aspects of the Earth, focusing on rocks, minerals, and geological processes. Their qualifications overlap significantly, as both professions require an understanding of earth sciences and often involve similar research and fieldwork activities.

How to become

You can get into this job through:

  • a university course
  • an apprenticeship

University

To work as a professional geoscientist you'll need a degree in a relevant subject. Courses often combine theory with fieldwork and practical training.

Degree subjects include:

  • geology
  • geoscience
  • geophysics
  • Earth science

It's becoming more common for new entrants to hold or be working towards postgraduate qualifications like an MSc or PhD.

Integrated postgraduate master's qualifications like a MGeol or MSci can be studied at university. These courses include more independent research and are designed to lead directly onto further study like a PhD.

It's useful to get some work experience through an internship or year in industry placement while you are at university. Your university careers service can help you find opportunities.

Organisations like Geology for Global Development also run projects and placements to help you gain skills.

Entry requirements

You'll usually need:

  • 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English, maths and science
  • 2 or 3 A levels, or equivalent, including a science, for a degree
  • a degree in a relevant subject for postgraduate study
