Geologists study the structure, composition, and processes of the Earth. Their work helps us understand natural hazards like earthquakes and volcanoes, find resources such as minerals and fossil fuels, and protect the environment. Geologists spend time both in the field, collecting samples and making observations, and in the laboratory, analysing data. They may also use specialised software to create maps and models of geological structures. In the UK, geologists are employed by environmental consultancies, mining companies, oil and gas firms, government agencies, and universities. The job can involve travel to various sites, sometimes in remote locations, and may require a good level of physical fitness.
