🚀 Careers in this path

Complete Relevant GCSEs and A Levels

Achieve Good GCSE Results

Focus on science subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics at GCSE level.

Most sixth forms and colleges require strong GCSE grades in sciences and maths to enrol in A Level courses. Aim for at least grade 6 or above in these subjects, as this will help you meet the entry requirements for science-based A Levels.

Choose Science A Levels

Select A Levels in Chemistry and Biology, plus another relevant subject such as Mathematics or Physics.

Universities usually require Chemistry and Biology for pharmacology degrees. Taking Mathematics or Physics as an additional A Level can strengthen your application and provide a broader scientific background.

Obtain a Degree in Pharmacology or a Related Subject

Apply for a Pharmacology Degree

Research universities and apply for an undergraduate degree in Pharmacology or a closely related field.

Most pharmacologists hold a degree in Pharmacology, Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, or a similar discipline. Use the UCAS system to apply, and check specific university entry requirements.

Gain Laboratory Experience

Take opportunities for practical laboratory work during your degree.

Many courses include lab-based modules or placements. You can also volunteer or apply for summer internships in research labs to gain hands-on experience, which is highly valued by employers.

Specialise and Advance Your Career

Consider Postgraduate Study

Pursue a Masters or PhD in Pharmacology to specialise further or move into research roles.

A postgraduate qualification can open doors to more advanced research positions in academia or the pharmaceutical industry. It also allows you to focus on a particular area such as clinical pharmacology, toxicology, or drug development.

Apply for Pharmacology Roles

Seek employment as a pharmacologist in academia, industry, or regulatory bodies.

Entry-level roles can be found in pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, or universities. Building a network by attending conferences and joining professional organisations such as the British Pharmacological Society can improve your job prospects.
