🚀 Careers in this path

Achieve Academic Qualifications

Complete GCSEs and A Levels

Take science-focused subjects such as Biology and Chemistry at GCSE and A Level.

Most university courses in pharmacology require strong grades in science subjects, especially Chemistry and Biology. Maths or Physics can also be beneficial. Aim for high grades to meet entry requirements for competitive courses.

Earn a Relevant Degree

Apply for and complete a degree in pharmacology or a related subject, such as biomedical science or biochemistry.

A BSc in Pharmacology is the most direct route, but degrees in biochemistry, biomedical sciences, or pharmacy are also accepted by employers and postgraduate programmes. Research universities with strong pharmacology departments and consider their research strengths and placement opportunities.

Consider Postgraduate Study

Pursue a Master's or Doctorate if you wish to specialise or work in research-heavy roles.

Some roles in pharmacology, especially in research or academia, require a postgraduate qualification such as an MSc, MRes, or PhD. These further studies can help you specialise in areas like clinical pharmacology, toxicology, or drug development.

Gain Practical Experience

Undertake Laboratory Placements

Look for internships or summer placements in university labs or pharmaceutical companies.

Many universities and companies offer summer research placements or year-long industry placements as part of your degree. These are valuable for developing laboratory, analytical, and research skills, and for making industry contacts.

Participate in Research Projects

Get involved in research projects either during your degree or as a volunteer.

You may be able to assist with research projects as an undergraduate, often as part of your dissertation or by volunteering within your department. This experience will help you understand experimental design, data analysis, and laboratory safety.

Start Your Career

Apply for Pharmacologist Positions

Look for entry-level jobs in pharmaceutical companies, research organisations, hospitals, or universities.

Entry-level roles may include research assistant, laboratory technician, or junior pharmacologist. Check job boards, company websites, and university careers services for opportunities. Tailor your CV to highlight relevant skills and experience.

Continue Professional Development

Join professional bodies and attend conferences to stay updated and network.

Joining organisations like the British Pharmacological Society can help you stay current with developments in the field, access training, and connect with other professionals. Attending workshops and conferences will further your knowledge and may open up opportunities for career advancement.
