nicotine
an addictive chemical found in tobacco that stimulates the nervous system, constricts blood vessels and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease
carcinogen
a substance or agent that can cause mutations in DNA, leading to uncontrolled cell division and the development of cancer
risk factor
anything that increases the likelihood of developing a disease, such as smoking, alcohol, poor diet or exposure to carcinogens
ethanol
the type of alcohol found in alcoholic drinks; it is absorbed into the bloodstream from the intestine and broken down by the liver
cirrhosis
a long-term liver disease caused by repeated damage to liver cells, often from alcohol; dead liver cells are replaced by scar tissue, which cannot perform normal liver functions
