Words and meanings to learn

electrolysis

the breaking down of an ionic compound using electricity

bauxite

a sedimentary rock rich in aluminium compounds (such as aluminium oxides and hydroxides); it is the primary ore from which aluminium is extracted

cryolite

a compound added to aluminium oxide to lower its melting point, making the electrolysis process more energy-efficient

aluminium oxide

the compound Al₂O₃ formed from bauxite; it is an ionic substance used as the starting material in the electrolysis extraction of aluminium

ore

a naturally occurring rock or mineral from which a metal can be profitably extracted — such as bauxite for aluminium
