English National Curriculum - Science
Mission Objectives
Describe the movement of electrons and identify which ions are oxidised and reduced during electrolysis of molten compounds
Predict the products formed at each electrode during electrolysis
(HT) Write balanced half-equations for the reactions at the electrodes
Save files related to this lesson
Words and meanings to learn
oxidation
reaction where a substance loses electrons
reduction
reaction where a substance gains electrons
anode
the positive electrode during electrolysis
cathode
the negative electrode during electrolysis
half-equation
equation that shows what happens to one reactant during a redox reaction, including the gain or loss of electrons; in electrolysis, this shows what happens at each electrode
