carbohydrate

a molecule made up of many glucose molecules joined together. It is a type of macromolecule found in foods such as pasta, rice and potatoes, and is needed to release energy for the functions of the body.

protein

a large molecule made up of many amino acids joined together. It is a large macromolecule found in foods such as meat and nuts; it is used by the body for growth and repair.

fibre

a food group which adds bulk to foods, it cannot be digested by the human body. It is found in cereals, wholegrains, fruits and vegetables and oats.

glucose

a small molecule made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, it is essential for respiration to release energy for the body.

fat/lipid

a molecule made from glycerol with 3 fatty acid chains, can be saturated or unsaturated. It is found in nuts, dairy and oils and is used by the body for insulation and an energy store.

  • Water bath or Bunsen burners if no water bath is available

  • Spotting tiles
  • Iodine solution
  • Biuret solution A and B

  • Results tables or paper/books to make results table
