AQA Trilogy GCSE Science - Science

3. Electromagnets in devices

Mission Objectives

Describe how electromagnets are used in an electric bell, a circuit breaker, and a relay, identifying their key components and function

Explain the role of electromagnets in each device, detailing how the magnetic field interacts with mechanical components to complete or break a circuit

Compare the use of electromagnets in these applications, discussing similarities and differences in their operation and purpose

Words and meanings to learn

solenoid

a coil of wire that produces a magnetic field when an electric current passes through it. When wrapped around an iron core, it enhances the strength of an electromagnet

relay switch

an electrically operated switch that uses a small current in one circuit to control a larger current in another circuit via an electromagnet

electric bell

a device that uses an electromagnet to repeatedly attract a metal arm, which strikes a bell to produce sound

circuit breaker

a safety device that automatically breaks the circuit if the current becomes too large; it protects electrical circuits from damage caused by overcurrent or short circuits

electromagnet

a temporary magnet created when an electric current flows through a coil of wire, usually wrapped around an iron core; the magnetism is lost when the current is switched off
