Achieve Required Qualifications

Complete GCSEs and A Levels

Earn at least five GCSEs at grades 9 to 4, including English and Maths, then study relevant A Levels for your chosen subject.

To become a secondary school teacher, you will need at least five GCSEs, including English and Maths, often with Science if you wish to teach it. For A Levels, select subjects that are related to what you want to teach, as this will help you meet university course requirements later.

Earn a Degree

Study for a bachelor’s degree, ideally in the subject you wish to teach.

Most secondary school teachers have a degree in the subject they want to teach. For example, if you wish to teach History, study for a History degree. Some universities also offer combined degrees with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which can streamline your training.

Gain Teaching Qualifications

Complete Initial Teacher Training (ITT)

Undertake a postgraduate teacher training course, such as a PGCE, or a school-based route.

After your degree, you need to complete Initial Teacher Training (ITT). The most common route is a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), which takes one year full-time. Alternatively, you can choose a school-based route like School Direct or Teach First, where you train while working in a school.

Achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

Meet the standards required for QTS to be able to teach in state schools.

QTS is essential for teaching in most UK state schools. Your ITT or PGCE course should lead to QTS if you pass all the requirements, including classroom placements and assessed teaching practice.

Begin Your Teaching Career

Complete Your Induction Year

Work as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) and successfully finish your induction year.

Your first year as a qualified teacher is known as your induction year, where you are supported and assessed in your first teaching post. This is usually spent at one school, and you must pass it to continue teaching.

Develop Professional Skills

Take part in ongoing professional development and consider gaining additional qualifications.

As you gain experience, you can attend training courses, gain additional qualifications, and take on extra responsibilities such as mentoring, leading a subject, or moving into pastoral care or senior leadership roles.
