Biomedical Scientist

View this career for different education levels:

Biomedical scientists play a vital role in diagnosing disease and monitoring patient treatment by analysing blood, tissue, and other bodily fluids in hospital laboratories. They use sophisticated equipment and a range of scientific techniques to investigate the causes of illness and help doctors make informed decisions about patient care. Most biomedical scientists in the UK are employed by the NHS, though some work in private healthcare, research institutions, or specialist laboratories. Daily tasks can include preparing samples, conducting chemical or biological tests, interpreting results, and maintaining strict health and safety standards. To become a biomedical scientist, you must complete an accredited degree in biomedical science and register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This is a dynamic and rewarding career, especially suited to those with a keen interest in science and healthcare.

🚀 Careers in this path

Achieve Relevant Qualifications

Complete GCSEs and A Levels

Obtain five GCSEs at grades 9 to 4, including English, Maths, and Science. Then, study A Levels in subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, and Maths.

Most biomedical science degree courses require strong science A Levels. Biology and Chemistry are usually essential, while Maths or Physics can also be helpful. Work hard to achieve high grades, as competition for university places can be strong.

Earn a Biomedical Science Degree

Apply for and complete an Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) accredited degree in biomedical science or a closely related subject.

It is important to choose a university course accredited by the IBMS because this ensures you will cover the necessary scientific knowledge and practical skills. Entry to these courses is competitive, so prepare a strong personal statement and gain relevant experience if possible.

Gain Practical Experience

Complete a Laboratory Placement

During your degree, secure a placement year or summer internship in a pathology laboratory or hospital.

Hands-on experience is highly valued by employers. Many university courses offer a sandwich year or placements that provide direct exposure to working in NHS or private sector labs. Seek opportunities to shadow professionals and learn about daily routines in a biomedical lab.

Obtain Registration Portfolio

Work towards completing the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio while on placement or after graduating.

This portfolio demonstrates your competence in key laboratory skills and knowledge. Most NHS employers will expect you to be working towards or have completed this portfolio before applying for a permanent role as a biomedical scientist.

Become Registered and Progress Your Career

Register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

Once you have completed your degree and IBMS portfolio, apply for registration with the HCPC, which is required to practise as a biomedical scientist in the UK.

Registration with the HCPC ensures you meet professional standards for working as a biomedical scientist. You will need to provide evidence of your qualifications and completed portfolio. Once registered, you can apply for jobs in NHS trusts, private labs, or research settings.

Seek Employment and Continue Professional Development

Apply for biomedical scientist roles and consider further study or specialisation to advance your career.

After gaining experience, you may choose to specialise in areas like haematology, microbiology, or clinical biochemistry. Continuing professional development is important, and many biomedical scientists go on to complete postgraduate qualifications or become involved in research, training, or management.
