Ask pupils why and how milk goes off? Ask pupils if they have ever smelt or seen gone-off milk. What happens to it? Do they know what needs doing to ensure milk lasts for as long as possible.
Presentation - starter slide.
Answer questions and take part in activities during the presentation.
Stop the presentation at the relevant slides: Talk Partners; AfLs; Songs.
Take part in the Choral Response Questions activity (see Assessment section) after the Keywords/Rocket Words slide.
Review the presentation on diseases and Louis Pasteur, asking questions as suggested. Pupils can discuss when they have been ill and how it was cured.
Watch today's film with Emily Norton fron Norton's Dairy. She explains how they use milk to make yoghurt - using pasteurisation.
Literacy / Research challenge - to find out what diseases Louis Pasteur helped cure and what they were.
Presentation - expert film.
The Glitter Challenge!
Watch the Mission Assignment Film for more help with this activity.
Select one child to put glitter on their hand, then tell the class they have to walk around the room shaking hands with as many different people as they can. Remind the children to shake with their right hand only and they must politely say "Hello, How are you?".
After 2-3 minutes stop the class and count how many member of the class have glittle on there hands. You could even show the class this as a fraction.
Ask the children what this may represent (the spread of diseases/bacteria). Ask how they can prevent this spreading.
The children should then answer the questions on the Handout - page 1.

The Science Behind the Science!
What causes the food colouring in the milk to move?
Milk is mostly made of water, but there are also tiny droplets of fat that are suspended in the milk. When the soap is added to the solution, it forms a bond with the fat molecules. The water in the milk is then able to carry away the fats, and it is this movement that we see when the colours move.
How about Louis Pasteur?
Louis Pasteur was an amazing scientist who achieved a lot in his life despite illness and the deaths of three of his five children. He paved the way of modern medicine and the field of microbiology. Before his discoveries, people thought that maggots and flies just appeared from dust or rotting waste. He is most famous for creating the process of Pasteurisation, but he also found a way to create vaccines in a lab, and created vaccines for anthrax, rabies, diphtheria, and chicken cholera.
Describe the importance for humans of exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of food and hygiene.
Biological systems - Body systems and cells - I know the symptoms of some common diseases caused by germs. I can explain how they are spread and discuss how some methods of preventing and treating disease benefit society. SCN 1-13a
