The Science Behind the Science

Smoking tobacco causes 28% of cancer deaths in the United Kingdom. It increases the risk of cancer of the lungs, mouth, nose, throat, voice box and sinuses. It also leads to other serious lung and heart conditions. Even people who only smoke lightly (up to 4 cigarettes each day) are more likely to die prematurely compared to non-smokers. Second-hand smokers (e.g. people with spouses who smoke) are also more likely to develop health problems. Smoking is the biggest preventable cause of cancer in the world.

There are over 5,000 different chemicals in tobacco smoke, 70 of which have been proven to promote or cause cancer. Many of the chemicals damage DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) or negatively impact the ability of our bodies to remove toxic substances. Examples of harmful chemicals found in smoke are: nicotine, carbon monoxide, benzene, ammonia, formaldehyde, arsenic and lead. Nicotine acts as a stimulant and is highly addictive.

Smoking causes a build-up of tar in the lungs. This can lead to coughing, wheezing, chest infections and asthma in the short term due to irritation of the airways and damage to tissue in the respiratory system. In the longer term, this can lead to emphysema, pneumonia, other chronic infections and cancer.
