Mission Objectives
Students will be able to explain the role of the kidneys in maintaining water balance in the body.
Students will be able to describe the processes of ultrafiltration, selective reabsorption, and osmoregulation in the kidney.
Students will understand the importance of water balance in the body and the consequences of imbalance.
Students will be able to evaluate the effects of different factors (such as ADH, alcohol, and caffeine) on water balance and kidney function.

osmoregulation
The active regulation of the osmotic pressure of bodily fluids to maintain the homeostasis of the body's water content.

The thin outside layer that surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell and controls the movement of materials into and out of the cell.

substrates
A molecule undergoing a reaction, for which the presence of an enzyme lowers the activation energy.
hypertonic
The concentration of a solution as compared to another solution.
