Words and meanings to learn
alveoli
small sack like structures which make up a large percentage of the lungs. This is where oxygen is passed through the walls to the capillaries.
capillary
a very small blood vessel which allows substances to be exchanged between the blood and tissues
bronchus
the tube that goes into each lung to deliver oxygen to the lung.
bronchioles
smaller tubes at the end of each bronchus.
diaphragm
a dome shaped muscular partition separating the thorax from the abdomen in mammals. It plays an important role in breathing as its contraction increases the volume of the thorax and inflates the lungs.
