Implementation

Trainer Guidance

Section 1: Introduction and Recap (5 minutes). Provide summary of Modules 1-4 (safety laws, hazards, teamwork).

  • Engagement Hook: Start with a quick, relatable question (e.g., “Who’s spotted a hazard at work this week?”) to grab attention before the recap.
  • Structure Recap: Use a simple 3-point list (e.g., “1. Laws keep us safe, 2. Hazards are everywhere, 3. Teamwork saves lives”) for clarity and memorability.
  • Visuals: Add a slide with icons (e.g., a hard hat for safety, a warning sign for hazards) to make it less text-heavy.
  • Timing: Trim to 4 minutes if needed, leaving 1 minute for the hook.

Section 2: Quick-Fire Quiz (10 minutes)

  • Current State: Fast, 10-question quiz with group shout-outs or written answers; sample question on the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Running the Quiz

  • Timing: Aim for 10 minutes total (about 45-60 seconds per question, including feedback).
  • Gamification: Split into teams (e.g., Team A vs. Team B), award 1 point per correct answer, and tally scores at the end.
  • Delivery: Read each question aloud, let teams shout out or write answers, then give the quick feedback to reinforce learning.
    • Feedback: After each question, briefly explain why the answer is correct (e.g., “B is right because the Act mandates safe systems and training, not meals!”) to reinforce learning.

Timing: Cap at 10 minutes to avoid rushing other sections.

Section 3: Q&A (10 minutes)

  • Current State: Encourage questions and clarify tricky topics like risk assessment.
  • Prompt Participation: Start with a trainer-led question (e.g., “What’s one thing you’re still unsure about?”) to break the ice, especially for shy learners.
    • Structure: Use the 6 scenes on the slide provided. On a flipchart jot down questions and answers, keeping the session organised and ensuring all topics are covered. Review answers on following slide.
    • Real-World Tie-In: Relate answers to practical examples (e.g., “Risk assessments help you spot a loose cable before it trips someone”).

Timing: Reserve 1-2 minutes at the end to summarise key takeaways from the Q&A.

Section 4: Exam Tips (5 minutes)

  • Current State: Provide tips (e.g., “Read questions twice”), explain test format (multiple-choice, 45 minutes), and include practice questions.
  • Mnemonics: Add a memorable acronym for exam success (e.g., “READ: Review, Eliminate, Answer, Double-check”) to make tips stick.
    • More Practice: Increase to 3-4 sample questions, covering different difficulty levels (e.g., easy: “What’s PPE?”, hard: “What’s the first step in a risk assessment?”).
    • Test Simulation: Simulate the multiple-choice format with a timer (e.g., 30 seconds per question) to mimic exam pressure.
    • Confidence Boost: End with a motivational note (e.g., “You’ve got this—trust your prep!”) to reduce anxiety.

Timing: Extend slightly to 6 minutes if needed, borrowing from Section 2 or 3.
