Words and meanings to learn

control rods

are rods that can be inserted into the reactor core to absorb neutrons and slow down or stop the fission chain reaction.

moderator

a material (like water or graphite) used in a nuclear reactor to slow down the fast-moving neutrons, making it easier for them to cause more fission in the fuel.

fission

when the nucleus of a large atom (like uranium) splits into two smaller nuclei, releasing energy.

chain reaction

is a process where each nuclear fission event releases neutrons that cause more fission events, creating a continuous cycle.

reactor core

is the part of a nuclear reactor where the fission happens. It contains the fuel rods (made of uranium), the moderator, and other materials that control the reaction.
