Teachers help children and young people learn different subjects such as maths, English, science, and history. They work in primary schools, secondary schools, and sometimes in special schools. A teacher plans lessons, explains new ideas, helps pupils with their work, and marks their homework or tests. They also look after the children in their class, making sure everyone is safe and happy. Teachers can be very important in helping children grow, learn new things, and become confident. To become a teacher in the UK, you usually need a degree and special training called a PGCE.
Teachers in the UK usually earn between £28,000 and £41,000 per year, depending on experience and location.
There are about 500,000 teachers working in schools across the UK.
Teachers often work around 37 to 40 hours a week, but may spend extra time marking work or preparing lessons.
Teaches young children in primary schools, helping them to learn reading, writing, maths, and other subjects.
Works with very young children in nurseries, helping them to play, learn, and get ready for school.
Helps children who need extra support with their learning, making sure everyone can do their best at school.
Try your best in all your lessons and enjoy learning.
Doing well at school is important to become a teacher. Listen to your teachers, do your homework, and ask questions when you do not understand something. This will help you get good grades, which you will need to go to university later.
Offer to help your classmates when they are stuck.
Teachers need to be helpful and caring. If you enjoy explaining things to friends or helping them with their work, this is great practice for teaching. You can also ask your teacher if you can help tidy the classroom or read to younger pupils.
Keep learning and choose subjects you enjoy.
You will need to pass your GCSEs, especially in English and maths. After that, you can go to sixth form or college and take A-levels, BTECs, or other qualifications, usually in subjects you like or want to teach one day.
Study for a degree in a subject you want to teach or in education.
Most teachers in the UK go to university to study for a degree. You can choose a subject you enjoy, like maths, history, or science, or you can study education. After your degree, you will need to do teacher training.
Do a special course to learn how to be a teacher.
After university, you need to do teacher training. This can be a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) or another course like School Direct. You will learn how to plan lessons and work in a real school with children.
Get a job as a teacher and help children learn.
When you finish your training, you can apply for jobs in primary or secondary schools. You will plan lessons, teach pupils, and help them enjoy learning every day.
