Gain Qualifications

Achieve GCSEs and A-levels

Most teacher training providers require at least 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English and mathematics. For teaching some subjects, science GCSE at grade 4 is also needed. A-levels or equivalent qualifications in your chosen teaching subject will help you progress to a relevant degree.

Complete a Degree

Study for a degree, either in education or in your chosen subject, at university.

You can take a Bachelor of Education (BEd), a BA or BSc with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), or a subject degree followed by a postgraduate teaching qualification. If your degree does not include QTS, you will need to complete further teacher training.

Undertake a postgraduate teacher training course, such as a PGCE or School Direct, to gain QTS.
