A Guide to Year 3 Scientific Enquiry

Developing Experts’ Year 3 Scientific Enquiry unit

Curiosity is at the core of Developing Experts’ approach to primary science, and our Year 3 Scientific Enquiry unit implements that curiosity into powerful classroom learning. Designed for Key Stage 2, our six-lesson sequence equips pupils with the essential enquiry skills they’ll use for the rest of their science education - and beyond.

Why Scientific Enquiry Matters in KS2

The National Curriculum prompts pupils to ‘work scientifically’ - but what does that mean in practice? From early KS2, pupils are ready to move from simple observations to structured investigations. Scientific enquiry teaches them how to ask relevant questions, plan fair tests, collect and present data and draw evidence-based conclusions. These skills build critical thinking, problem solving and communication, all of which are abilities that benefit other subjects and future learning.

Unit Structure and Content

Our Scientific Enquiry unit leads pupils through six structured lessons, each carefully sequenced to deepen understanding. Pupils begin by exploring how a solar oven can be made more effective; here, they pose questions and make predictions. They then progress to practical tests - including cleaning coins and baking cakes - where they record results, analyse data and write conclusions.

The unit covers every key skill identified in the curriculum: setting up fair tests, making accurate measurements, using scientific language and diagrams and presenting findings clearly. As with all our units, the lessons are cumulative; this structure encourages pupils to recall and apply knowledge as they move from one investigation to the next.

Learning from Industry Experts

One of the most standout features of this unit is its links to industry professionals. Within the lessons, pupils hear from experts such as nuclear operators, chemical analysts and material scientists. Our short expert videos reveal scientific applications and how the skills pupils are practising in the classroom are used in exciting real-world careers.
