How to use our Science Design & Approach document

A new release for all teachers and Science Leads, this document outlines our approach to the Science National Curriculum from EYFS to KS4.

How to use our Science Design & Approach document

We’ve recently released a brand-new document on the DE platform: our Science Design & Approach guide. As a teacher or Science Lead, this document gives you a clear overview of how our curriculum has been designed from EYFS to KS4 and how it supports progression, deeper thinking and real-world application across all key stages.

From Early Years to GCSE, our science curriculum focuses on deep, analytical thinking, and helps pupils question the world around them. The document outlines the intent, implementation and impact of our approach, showing how knowledge and skills build steadily and progressively from EYFS through to KS4. It also highlights how careers, enquiry skills and practical work are woven throughout to help pupils see science as relevant and exciting in their day-to-day lives.

How to use this document

We’ve designed this document to function as a helpful reference for Science Leads and teachers looking to:

  1. Review curriculum intent – When updating your science policy or preparing for a school inspection, we helpfully outline how DE’s curriculum aligns with the National Curriculum and supports disciplinary and substantive knowledge development.
  2. Map progression – The implementation section shows how lessons are sequenced to build knowledge and enquiry skills over time, from simple observations in EYFS to complex data analysis at KS4. It’s a useful guide when planning long-term progression maps or cross-key stage handovers.
  3. Plan for continuity and retrieval – The document explains how recap questions, AfL prompts and topic threads support cumulative learning. This is helpful for teachers reviewing assessment strategies or building consistency across year groups.
  4. Support practical science – The final section outlines how practical work develops across key stages and includes guidance on equipment and materials, making it a valuable reference for planning investigations or auditing resources.

So, whether you’re reviewing your science curriculum or looking to support your school with the best documentation, our design & approach document offers a clear, concise summary of our design principles and pedagogical approach. It’s an essential resource for Science Leads, new teachers and anyone looking to get the most out of the DE platform.

You can now find the Design & Approach document on the DE platform, in your ‘Curriculum Documents’ section. We hope you find it a useful companion for curriculum planning, staff meetings and departmental reviews.
