A Close Look at Year 6 ‘My Place’

Why this final KS2 unit is the perfect way to round off your pupils’ primary geography education.

My Place

Developing Experts’ geography curriculum strongly emphasises the relationship between people, their environment and how we respond to the geographical events around us. ‘My Place’ - the last unit in Year 6 and DE’s geography curriculum as a whole - combines all of the ideas and concepts your pupils have developed over their time in primary school. By choosing a place that is meaningful to them and researching geographical facts about that place, they get the chance to practice all of the geographical skills they’ve developed.

Unit and Lessons Overview

Like every unit in DE’s geography curriculum, ‘My Place’ contains six lessons. In lessons 1 and 2, pupils research the location of their place and what the climate is like there. By doing so, they recap the knowledge and practice the skills learned from previous year groups and units, such as what biomes are and reading six-figure grid references. This spiral way of learning is a key feature in DE’s geography curriculum - every piece of information your pupils learn is reinforced later on, ensuring that it becomes embedded long-term.

Lessons 3 and 4 recap on physical and human features, another key strand of knowledge woven throughout our curriculum. First introduced in KS1, several units throughout our curriculum explore the physical and human features found in different cities, countries and continents. ‘My Place’ follows and adds to this pattern as your pupils conduct their own research on the importance of these features in their chosen place.

In Lesson 5, pupils compare and contrast their place with a different location, describing their similarities and differences. They explore the climate, worldwide location, culture, population, settlement type and more. Lesson 6 is the final lesson and brings together all the pupils’ learning in a research task, where they create a research-based presentation about their place.

Skills and Knowledge Developed

In this unit, pupils receive the autonomy to decide what they would like to research and how they would like to communicate their learning. Choosing a place which is meaningful to them means that they can share their insights from a more personalised perspective. This valuable experience combines personal insight with the geographical skills and knowledge developed throughout KS1 and KS2, making it a great opportunity for teachers to assess their pupils’ overall progress.
