Mapped against the AQA GCSE Trilogy specification, this unit is structured to build on students' prior learning from earlier years, particularly from their studies in thermal physics, forces, and energy transfers. While flexible in sequencing, the unit is designed with the assumption that foundational knowledge—such as the particle model and basic ideas of conservation—has already been introduced and can now be extended into more detailed and quantitative applications.
Students will revisit core ideas, such as the conservation of energy and energy stores, and apply them to real-world scenarios, from the efficiency of domestic appliances to the global challenges associated with fossil fuels and renewable energy sources. This unit explores how the concept of energy emerged in the 19th century to describe work output in steam engines and has since become central to our understanding of chemical, biological, and mechanical systems.
Both substantive knowledge (e.g., specific energy stores, energy transfer pathways, power, and efficiency) and disciplinary knowledge (e.g., interpreting data, evaluating energy usage, and designing fair tests) are embedded throughout. Practical and investigative work is used to deepen understanding—for example, by measuring specific heat capacity or comparing the efficiency of different devices. Students develop skills in applying equations quantitatively, using units correctly, and interpreting graphical data.
Through scaffolded questioning, prompts, and structured revisits, the unit reinforces key prior learning while enabling students to extend their thinking. Complex concepts, such as energy dissipation and Sankey diagrams, are introduced with visual and conceptual supports to ensure accessibility and progression.
At Developing Experts, we believe in connecting scientific understanding with meaningful real-world applications. The study of energy is not limited to classroom theory—it underpins critical global issues such as energy sustainability, climate change, and the development of new technologies. To help students make these connections, each lesson includes expert career videos from our STEM industry partners, offering real-world insights into how the science they are learning is applied in careers such as renewable energy engineering, environmental science, and sustainable technology development.
This unit equips students with the knowledge, practical experience, and scientific literacy they need to succeed in GCSE Combined Science, while also inspiring them to think critically about the role of science in addressing 21st-century challenges and exploring future career opportunities.
