Pasteur was the first person to realise the reason why items such as milk, beer and wine 'went off' or soured. He discovered that certain germs and bacteria were the cause of it. From here, he worked out that bacteria could be boiled then cooled. This process has now been named after him, as 'pasteurisation'. How cool to have something named after you!
