Here is a simple chromatography experiment. We take some chromatography paper and attach it to something so that it hangs into a beaker without touching the sides. The bottom of the beaker is filled with a small amount of the solvent, which is absorbed slowly by the chromatography paper. As the solvent travels up the paper, it begins to separate the different colours in the ink. Why is it important that the chromatography paper is absorbent?
