We should test a range of different insulating materials; for example, cotton wool, tissue paper and polystyrene balls. Until we have conducted the experiment we will be uncertain about which material is the most effective insulator. We should use the same mass of insulating material and the same volume of water in each case. In any experiment, the independent variable is the one that's changed.
