We can reduce this wasted thermal energy by using a pan with a wider base and a lid. The other issue with using a pan to heat water is that a lot of thermal energy is actually used to heat the base of the pan itself. If we could place a heating element inside the pan, it would overcome this issue. This is how kettles work.
