View this career for different education levels:

Paramedics are highly trained healthcare professionals who provide emergency medical care to people who are injured or suddenly become ill. They are often the first to arrive at the scene of an emergency, working from ambulances or rapid response vehicles. Paramedics assess patients, provide life-saving interventions such as CPR or administering medication, and transport patients to hospital if necessary. The role requires quick decision-making skills, excellent communication, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Paramedics often work shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, as emergencies can happen at any time.

🚀 Careers in this path

Achieve the Required Qualifications

Obtain GCSEs or Equivalent

Gain at least five GCSEs at grades 4 to 9, including English, maths, and a science subject.

Most university paramedic science courses require a minimum of five GCSEs, including core subjects. If you do not have these qualifications, consider taking equivalent functional skills or adult learning courses. Science is especially important as it underpins much of the medical knowledge needed for the role.

Complete A-levels or Equivalent

Study A-levels or Level 3 qualifications, such as a BTEC in Health and Social Care or a relevant science subject.

A-levels in biology, chemistry, or health and social care are highly recommended. Alternatively, a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care may be accepted. Check the specific entry requirements for the universities you are interested in, as these can vary.

Apply for a Paramedic Science Degree

Apply to an approved university to study a Paramedic Science degree, which typically lasts three years.

The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) requires paramedics to complete an approved degree in paramedic science. During your studies, you will learn about anatomy, physiology, patient care, and spend time on clinical placements with ambulance services.

Gain Practical Experience

Undertake Clinical Placements

Complete placements as part of your degree, working alongside experienced paramedics in real-life situations.

Placements are an essential part of your training and provide hands-on experience in a variety of emergency settings. You will develop skills in assessing patients, administering medication, and using emergency equipment. Make the most of these opportunities by asking questions and reflecting on your experiences.

Volunteer or Work in Healthcare

Gain additional experience by volunteering or working in healthcare settings, such as hospitals or care homes.

Volunteering with organisations like St John Ambulance, the Red Cross, or in hospital settings can enhance your practical skills and demonstrate your commitment to a healthcare career. Many NHS trusts also offer work experience programmes for aspiring paramedics.

Register and Begin Your Career

Register with the HCPC

After graduating, register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to practise as a paramedic.

Registration with the HCPC is a legal requirement to work as a paramedic in the UK. The process involves proving your qualifications and fitness to practise. Once registered, you can legally use the title ‘paramedic’.

Apply for Paramedic Positions

Apply for jobs with NHS ambulance trusts or private providers to start your career as a newly qualified paramedic.

Most paramedics work for NHS ambulance services, but there are also opportunities with private ambulance companies and in specialist roles. As a newly qualified paramedic, you will continue learning on the job and may choose to specialise or progress into advanced roles over time.
